    #askmark I am a tall skinny guy and very LEG heavy. I don't need much weight to sink but if it is round my waist, my trim is terrible. I usually add some weight to my tank band but need to add enough to compensate for my Dump-able weight around my waist. Is it worth just having a small amount of non Dump-able weight, or should I still have some that I can get rid of if needed. Thanks

    #askmark - 4 dives on my Perdix 2 and loving the AI and the easy to read screen and functionality. Here's another question on SAC rate. Perdix is telling me my average SAC is 20.4 psi/min. My introductory understanding is if I want to convert to cubic feet/min (RMV - using DAN's definition) I would need to factor in tank volume and working pressure. Does Perdix allow for this? I have two tanks I routinely use that are slightly different. I don't see where I can enter "Tank 1- 100 cu ft, 3445 psi" and Tank 2- 100 cu ft, 3144 psi" in the computer. Shearwater associates the AI serial number to the tank to support up to 4 transmitters. How about managing multiple tanks with one transmitter.

    • @ScubaDiverMagazine
      @ScubaDiverMagazine 21 годину тому

      Shearwater remove cylinder volume from the equation, they explain why in their User Manual. I don't think you can enter cylinder volume in the Perdix but, some logging apps _will_ let you and do the calculations for you. But I believe Shearwater do it so that you can use the same transmitter on any cylinder and get similar numbers to compare

    When our son started diving with me 4 years ago at age 15, my wife (she doesn't dive) insisted that I maximize the safety factors. One of my solutions was to get myself a Shearwater Perdix AI with two transmitters. I mounted one of the transmitters on my 1st stage, I mounted the other on my son's 1st stage (both on a 6" HP hose). I also got him a hose-mounted AI dive computer (Aqualung 550 series) so he can keep track of his own dive data. With this setup, we're both diving on computers (safer than tables, IMO, and both are NITROX-capable) and as long as I'm diving next to him (he's my buddy so I'd better be pretty close, right?) I can see what his air pressure is without distracting him - usually this is a drive-by as I swim past him. The Perdix reconnects to his transmitter pretty quickly if I've gone out of range. I also have a separate analog SPG on my rig. I love the Perdix AI it's bombproof and way more capable than I'll probably ever need.

    I've been of the opinion (and like assholes we all have one that might be different to someone elses) AI is an awesome piece of technology looking for a problem to solve. Hear me out! Yes you get the benefit of knowing your tank pressure on your dive computer. Yes you get to see what your SAC rate is right now (but ask yourself what you can do with that information right now?). It can give you a proxy for how long your air *might* last at that depth too. All great stuff, but not exactly game changing. How much harder to do this (angles wrist towards face) versus this (grabs analogue gauge in front of me)? Its easier for sure - but is it $600 easier? When you consider the premium payed for the AI dive computer and the pod - you could have had another dive trip! Now I know I'm likely to get ripped a new opinion by the AI fan bois, but just stop for a moment and ask was it really that big a difference to your diving and at $600 do you still feel you've got value for money from ALL the extra information you have? Of course if money is no object - then sign me up for two.... On that - Saw a diver on the dive boat today with a $400 reg and $700 worth of pods plugged into the HP ports. She wanted a backup to her BT AI, so bought another BT AI dive computer as its more of a weight saving than having a HP hose and gauge!

    • @brandonm1088
      @brandonm1088 3 дні тому

      I think of the SPG to a dive table. It's a great rule of thumb and you can see the data and act upon it. Done deal. But when computers came onto the scene people realized how much safer they were and more accurate they were than dive tables. You could do complex dive profiles safely now. AI comps these days give you lots of historical data that is live. Pre-AI I knew my start air and end air and dive time and water temp. With AI I can see how a thermocline affects my breathing or how quickly I breathe at the beginning of dive versus at the end etc. This information is a gold mine for self improvement and dive safety. Now that more people are using dive computers solo I think we will start seeing more analysis software coming out and that's going to be super cool.

      They only need a wash and a dry. You just want to keep them clean and brush off any salt build up after a dive. Once your regs are thoroughly dry then store them in a safe dark place. Change the battery in the transmitter every 300 dives or 5 years, whichever comes first

If the manual suggests having a shop replace the battery you can always just take it in to be replaced during your regulator service.

    #ask Mark, this may be a stupid question but I was curious as to how the pressures from a 3,000 psi tank to a 30 PSI is actually stepped down is it a metered orifice or a diaphragm with a spring load?

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 3 дні тому

      Look up how a scuba first stage works. There are some disassembly videos on YT and you can usually find the service manuals as a PDF online. The Apeks DST ones that I use have a diaphragm with a spring. They're stepped down to so-called Intermediate pressure of about 145 psi/10 bar. The remainder is done by the second stage (the thing in front of your mouth).

    #askmark Hey mark, quick question about carying cylinders. Does it really matter if you carry the cylinder by its valve? During my open water i was told its a bad idea. I work in a dive shop though and everyone carries the cylinders by the valves. So does carying a cylinder by its valve comprise the threading?

    • @ScubaDiverMagazine
      @ScubaDiverMagazine 22 години тому

      In a perfect HSE / OSHA world we would carefully transport cylinders on a sack barrow or trolley with dedicated handles around the body of the cylinder. But, we don't have the time for all of that. I will say: look after your back regardless of how you hold cylinders so your back doesn't suffer in later years. The closer to the neck or the body of the cylinder you can carry it, the better. You're more likely to stretch the threads by overfilling a cylinder than by picking it up by the valve. But you also don't want to damage the valve knob by holding onto the end of that. Hold the cylinder so that the palm of your hand covers the far side of the opening with fingers either side so that the weight is more evenly distributed.

    #Askmark I am turning 17 this year, should I look into a drysuit and a drysuit course to take or should I wait until I stop growing. It’s just we live in Massachusetts and it’s cold. I have tried a semi dry but am still curious what you think. I’m an advanced open water diver and am looking for the next step

    • @ScubaDiverMagazine
      @ScubaDiverMagazine День тому

      Your best option for owning a drysuit would be a front-entry drysuit with socks. Most front-entry drysuits have a telescopic body so your height doesn't matter too much. Socks, instead of integrated boots, require rock boots to go over the top. So you can get a larger size and grow into them. Personally I would rent until you know that you've stopped growing or find a good 2nd hand drysuit that fits you, my first drysuit was 2nd hand. Drysuits are definitely a level up for longer and colder dives so, I would recommend the Drysuit Course. I would do that first, talk to your Instructor and get the skills and then see what drysuits are out there.

    #Askmark will you be doing a review on the new Suunto Ocean Watch? Also as someone doing their open water soon would you suggest getting familiar with your own dive watch, whilst doing the open water, rather than looking at other bits of equipment like a BC or regulator. I’ve heard dive computers with dive schools tend to be notoriously unreliable with breakages? (I already have fins, mask and a wetsuit as I snorkel as well)

      Yes, I've had a Suunto Ocean for about 4 days now and I'll make a video on it for next week. I'd recommend your own computer over regs or a BCD. But I wouldn't worry too much about getting your own dive computer for Open Water. It'll be cool to have your own and get used to it from the start. But you'll be focusing on your skills and buoyancy at the start.

      Probably next week, I've had one for 4 days now and it's a very nice machine.

    Where might one obtain that loop that you run through the eyelet in your dust cap? Cheers!

      I think I salvaged them from an old bag that was falling apart. I kept the zipper pulls because they seemed handy. You'll probably be able to find some online

    In terms of things I would be worrying about, sharks eating my fins are not really on the list. Loosing your dive buddy or underwater mix ups because everyone looks the same is probably a more likely scenario. Following that surface visibility. Having a bit of colour or some way of easily being recognised is probably more important for most divers.

      News Flash! 99.9% of all animals including fish can only see in black ,white or shades of gray. The only 'animals' who can see actual colors are humans and the great apes.

    The term ‘Yum Yum Yellow’ came about after a series of tests in 1971 by Dr Scott Johnson and Ernest McFadden on the reflectivity of sea survival equipment. Out of the black, red and yellow devices used in the study, it was the yellow life vest that was repeatedly attacked.

    #Askmark Thanks Mark for the grate content and advice. I have been told that using my regulators and BCD in the pool could damge them is there any truth to this or are there spcial precautions that I shod take to protect them when in the pool ?

    • @ScubaDiverMagazine
      @ScubaDiverMagazine 5 днів тому

      Yes, chlorinated water can damage your equipment after repeated and extended exposure. The chlorine and any other pool chemicals can degrade certain parts of the BCD and discolour and harden them. This takes a long time depending on how much chemical is in the water but, I would still wash my gear in soapy fresh water after a pool dive to wash off any chlorine and maximise the lifetime of my gear.

    These are actually really solid tips. I've been diving a long time, and I've been guilty of couple of these, and I've seen all of them.

    One pair of my fins is yellow, one is blue, another is black. I’ve never seen a difference. The sharks I’ve encountered are either curious or shy and it doesn’t seem to matter which fins (or colour tank) I’m using.
