    #askmark what do you think about the latest push for recreational CCR with the DiveTalk GO (manufacturered by KISS). Apparently it will be probably the cheapest unit on the market and it is also being allowed for use with Trimix. The last push into this market was probably that Mares Horizon SCR (manufactured by Revo) which is as good as a SCR can be and has the might of SSI behind it... Do you see the DiveTalk GO winning where the Horizon has stalled?

    #AskMark can you introduce the full face masks? Always been curious when would it make sense to have/use one? Can you walk through the key pros & cons, key use cases and add your own opinion - what do you think about them, have you tried, do you like to dive with them?

  • @miks8
    @miks8 7 годин тому

    #AskMark owning your own air compressor ever a good idea for a hobbyist diver? Are there any small enough units that would make sense for a person to own? Or is the acquisition + operational costs simply never justified?

    • @thomas40444
      @thomas40444 7 годин тому

      You can get small single phase 13/16A units for about £1500-2500, but you'll need somewhere to plug these in or you'll have to invest in an inverter generator to power them. Someone I dive with bought himself one, but imo you are better off joining a local club (BSAC for UK) which usually gets you an air ticket for the year in with membership. You can also get portable compressors hooked up to either a 2-stroke or 4-stroke petrol engine (lawnmower engines usually), but these come with the cost of servicing the engines. You also need to replace the filter cartridges after so many hours, typically 12. These cost about £40 a pop.

  • @miks8

    #AskMark what's the deal with DPV cost? Why do those things cost like real motorbikes/scooters (i.e. 10-14k) when clearly there aren't that many parts and they are quite simple in their build? Is that just a supply/demand issue or are those costs actually justified somehow?

    • @harambeexpress
      @harambeexpress 3 години тому

      I think it's partially an economy of scale thing. They don't make that many of a particular model, and those parts largely have to come from the same company rather than being spread out across multiple companies all with their own specialisation and scales (eg. Bosch is a common OEM). A lot more cars and motorbikes are made and they share a lot more of the same parts which brings cost down. Also, I think some of the price is "because they can". If you're looking at an exploration grade Seacraft DPV they're gonna change exploration grade prices... Even though there are electric cars the same price!

    #askmark What is the average life expectancy of a 1st and / or 2nd stage? At which point would you recommend replacing your regulators?

    • @RAVINGMUNSTER
      @RAVINGMUNSTER 9 годин тому

      As long as it's serviced regularly, a 1st or 2nd stage can last decades. End of life is when you ( or more likely your LDS) can no longer get the required spare parts. Most regulators are replaced not because they're beyond repair, but because something more fashionable is wanted!

    • @miks8
      @miks8 7 годин тому

      +1 to the above. And its even more difficult to wear off the first stage. Most likely the diving tech will simply move on before you will see the first stage fail. I mean for one you can find ancient diving systems from like the Soviets that are technically still functional, its just that there is none who can service them and you cannot get any parts for it anymore, obviously, but they still work.

    • @harambeexpress
      @harambeexpress 3 години тому

      There are people who use first and second stages that are decades old. They can update, but they don't need to. I think there are quite old designs now that are still being sold brand new because they got the formula right and there's been no need to update...I'd argue there's no major differences between designs from the early 2000s until today so that makes them at least 20 years old already (eg. Scubapro Mk25). Having said that divers like Will/Bill Hogarth Main kept the same regulators with "old" designs and technology from the 70s up into the late 2000s even though there were newer better technology readily available. He had a obsession for having fewer "failure points" so maybe his old regs one or two less o-rings or something... But they worked and he did (maybe still does?) some fairly serious cave dives.

    #askmark What do you think about Circular Wing vs Horseshoe Wing for diving with doubles and stage? I loved the circular wing for single-cylinder recreational, and recently did the trimix course, which required diving with doubles and carrying a stage - during the course, I dived with a horseshoe wing, and it took some time learn to balance the bubble and stay in good trim. Which style of wing do you prefer for diving with stages on the side and how do you keep the trim? Love the channel - keep up the good work :)

    • @tetruh7593
      @tetruh7593 6 годин тому

    #askmark Hi Mark, getting back in the water after quite a long break. Started diving back in ‘93 for around 10 years…diving was mainly in the English Channel off Dover, Malta, Gozo, Scapa and few others. I’m def not going back to 2min bottom times with all the kit in crap viz 😂. In recent years, found myself doing more holiday dives. This year already dived Gozo and Sharm area. Just purchased AL compact Pro regs, suunto Vyper novo with transmitter and now at the point of what style of bcd do I go for? I have an ok budget, so open to backplates, wings, Scubapro Hydros styles etc, but want the right set up so don’t have to change in the future. Main places plan to dive are warmer waters.

    #AskMark Hello I'm in the market for a decent dpv / scuba scooter. while looking deeply into this I discovered what seems to a scooter scam. youtube is flooded with BS "top x" or people with their kids using them in reviews for these devices. they contain the same rebranded scooters for the most part... Sea Doo, Yamaha, Nautica.... all of which appear to be glorified pool toys for kids. even the models retailing for over $1k. Definitely some type of slimy market misinformation going on. could you do a video on this and possibly recommend some credible DPVs like the DiveX BlackTip. I think this would really help the community from buying junk. Thanks

    #askmark, is there an increased risk by using yellow fins when diving with sharks?

    • @ScubaDiverMagazine
      @ScubaDiverMagazine 3 дні тому

      There is some evidence of sharks having a preference for the colour yellow. But it isn't a definite trigger for them. They won't see the colour yellow and attack. It is something to be aware of though. The contrast of brighter colours like yellow and white and shiny jewellery will catch their attention. If I only had yellow fins I wouldn't skip a dive that might have sharks. I would just be a bit more aware of my movements and position in the water. But if I were planning a trip that was focused on sharks then I would leave them at home.

    I ❤❤❤my XS Scuba Pink dSMB. It’s about 6ft in length. Has a weight pocket so it can stand up easier at the surface & when deployed from my manta or finger reel. I can inflate it with my alternate, low pressure BCD hose or manually. It has a pressure release valve & stays pressurized. I bought it 7 years ago because: 1. I average 50 dives a year 2. I dive in a dumb boat driver area (Pompano Beach, FL) meaning anyone can rent a boat & ignore all the rules of boating & claim my head is a coconut as their excuse for running me over 3. In a two foot wave you can’t see cheap ones, they are too short between waves 4. It doubles as a lift bag. Memorial wknd I lifted an 11 lbs anchor out of the reef. Dive charter was happy to pick up my find as I sent it to the surface 20 min into my 60 min dive at 65 ft.

    #AskMark spool or reel for deploying dSMB? pros and cons?

    • @ScubaDiverMagazine
      @ScubaDiverMagazine 3 дні тому

      It tends to be proportional to glove thickness and how many tools I need to use during the dive. Personally I prefer spools. Fewer moving parts and they're a lot cheaper to replace. They can be a little more fiddly in colder waters with thick gloves but, there are ways around that. Reels tend to be bigger so you have something to hold onto and a ratchet mechanism so if you let go it doesn't go very far. And if your hands are full they're easier to use.

      Outstanding! That's great news. I think back to some of the things that I just learnt by doing them and how much better it is to get proper Instruction. Well done you.

    Step #1 buy gear that is easily maintainable and repairable in the first place! If it's got proprietary plastic steer clear. I have had some success with replacing/modifying inflators with standard k-type ones... But really, just opt for gear that uses standard designs wherever possible. Gotta love a completely standard Backplate and Wing setup and well proven/servicable regulators - zero worries ever. With a plastic drysuit zip such as usually used on a Santi, refer to those institutions you can find on their website/UA-cam.

      I have far too much gear that I've tried a few times and then it lives in a drawer. I now only buy something if I need it and know that it's going to last

    #askmark Hy, thank you very much for your great videos. I would be interested in your opinion or advice regarding my future diving career: I would like to focus on cave diving or wreck diving in the long term and am considering learning either sidemount or rebreather for this. What would be your advice as to which path is the right one? About my background: I mostly dive in German lakes and occasionally on vacation. All the best to you and please keep making great videos

    #ASKMARK I’ve been diving a DiveRite stainless backplate and wing and one of my friends have been looking at a Hog backplate and wing and wanted to ask about people’s opinions on them

    #ASKMARK. Good day. Could I use the orion signal flares in the event of getting left behind in ocean. Could be helpful at night in the dark. Was thinking of putting them in a steel screw able waterproof container. What would you suggest. Thank you and must say I enjoy all your helpful videos.

    Tell us more about the aftermarket fabric mask strap. I have an oceanic shadow mask I would love to swap out for something more elastic.
